Measha Brueggergosman in concert

I saw Measha Brueggergosman in concert last night. She is mostly known for singing opera, but on this occasion she was singing jazz and jazzy versions of hymns, pop, and folk songs. She’s on tour promoting her “I’ve Got a Crush on You” album.

Here’s a statement I can’t remember saying about any other concert: Even though the performance of the main attraction was not really my thing, the concert was still highly enjoyable. The style of Brueggergosman’s singing is not my favourite — it’s almost an operatic style even when she’s not singing opera.

But she is a thrill to see in person — she’s hilarious and witty and wildly energetic. The five-piece band that was backing her up was also amazing. I loved the fact that in their solos they were able to make Brueggergosman laugh.

I was slightly disappointed to discover that “Brueggergosman” is just a combination of her husband’s last name and her own. But the long name suits her larger-than-life personality.

Even though I’m not rushing out to buy her album, I highly recommend seeing her in person if you get a chance.

You can also see her as a judge on the TV show Canada’s Got Talent these days, although she’s a bit more restrained there.
