New Girl (season 1)

{5/5} “So when I do the chicken dance I do it a little differently. Instead of doing claps, I like to do a peck. It’s more realistic.”

New Girl season 1, aired in 2011-12

Jess (Zooey Deschanel) just broke up with her boyfriend and finds a new place — with three guys. Nick (Jake M. Johnson), Winston (Lamorne Morris), and Schmidt (Max Greenfield). Jess is an elementary school teacher who’s very quirky — for example, she’s been known to randomly break into song. Nick is a slacker working as a bartender, Winston just got back from playing basketball overseas, and Schmidt is a businessman and ladies’ man.

Then there’s Cece (Hannah Simone), Jess’s best friend who’s a model (Schmidt voted for Jess as a housemate because of her model friends). Justin Long (Live Free or Die Hard), Dermot Mulroney (My Best Friend’s Wedding), and Jeanne Tripplehorn (Waterworld) also show up as guest stars.

I started watching this show because of Deschanel (Elf and 500 Days of Summer). But the four main characters in the show are all unusual and amazing — that’s what makes it brilliant. There’s nothing unique about the basic premise — it’s the characters and the actors who bring them to life who make the show funny. Yes, it’s another one of the current TV shows in which every episode is hilarious.

The series was created by Elizabeth Meriwether (writer of No Strings Attached).
