The Go-Getter

{4/5} “You’re a jerk, jerk, jerk. But I like the sound of your voice.”

Mercer’s mom has died so he decides to steal a car and go find his half brother so he can tell him. His half-brother is a bit of a drifter, though, so it might be tough to find him. But Mercer meets some interesting people along the way. He also looks up Joely, the girl he’s loved since middle school. While he’s on his trip he gets somewhat strange phone calls from Kate, the woman whose car he stole.

The Go-Getter was released in 2007.

It’s a bit similar to The Straight Story (the movie I watched yesterday) in that the main character is on a road trip to find his brother who he hasn’t seen in a long time.

Mercer isn’t in the habit of stealing things. He feels he needs to visit his half brother, and one day rather suddenly decides to steal a car.

It turns out there’s a bit of a coincidence — or fate — regarding the owner of the car.

Mercer learns about his brother, and he learns about himself. He and Kate have some fairly quirky dialogue.

Lou Taylor Pucci (Thumbsucker) plays Mercer, Zooey Deschanel (the TV show New Girl) plays Kate, and Jena Malone (Stepmom) plays Joely. Judy Greer (Love and Other Drugs), Maura Tierney (the TV show ER), and Nick Offerman (the TV show Parks and Recreation) have small parts.

The movie was directed by Martin Hynes (The Big Split).
