The problem with voter ID laws

Republican lawmakers in a bunch of US states have enacted voter ID laws for the specific purpose of reducing the number of black people voting, because black people typically vote for the Democratic Party.

Some lawmakers go to the trouble of saying that the laws are being enacted to prevent voter fraud. But voter fraud is an infinitesimal percentage of voters — it’s not a serious problem.

It’s utterly ridiculous that this is happening in 2016. Here is the list of states where you now have to present photo ID to vote:

  • Georgia
  • Indiana
  • Kansas
  • Mississippi
  • North Dakota
  • Tennessee
  • Texas
  • Virginia
  • Wisconsin

If you live in any of these states, please inform your elected officials of your displeasure regarding these laws. I also encourage you to ensure that  you can vote before election day comes around — this is an important one.
