Moana

{4.5/5} “If you wear a dress and have an animal sidekick, you’re a princess.”

Moana, released in 2016

Moana’s father has taught her that she will one day be chief, everything she needs is on the island, and it would be dangerous to go beyond the reef. But the ocean calls to her. Her grandma tells her she must find the demi-god Maui and get him to return the heart of the goddess Te Fiti.

The animation is gorgeous. The songs are great within the context of the movie, and a couple of them are catchy.

The story is simple but it’s told in a mostly interesting way — and there are some funny parts.

Stars the voices of Dwayne Johnson and Auli’i Cravalho. Directed by Ron Clements and John Musker (The Princess and the Frog) along with Don Hall and Chris Williams (Big Hero 6). The songs are by Opetaia Foa’i , Mark Mancina, and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
