Last Week Tonight (season 4)

{5/5} “For now let’s move on to President Trump, the silver lining for anyone who died in 2015.”

Last Week Tonight season 4, aired in 2017

John Oliver continues to bring us stories we need to hear, in a funny-yet-serious way:

  • Tibetan sovereignty and human rights
  • gerrymandering
  • net neutrality
  • vaccines
  • local news
  • nuclear waste
  • presidential pardon of Joe Arpaio
  • corporate consolidation
  • forensic evidence
  • Equifax security breach

He also continues to talk about the shocking presidency of Donald Trump, as the quotation above suggests. In the season finale he says the biggest problems with President Trump for the future of US politics and society are:

  • delegitimizing the media
  • whataboutism
  • trolling

and he explains why you should be concerned about each. As Oliver says, “Their natural endpoint is the erosion of our ability to decide what’s important, have an honest debate, and hold one another accountable.”

I previously reviewed season 3.
