{3/5} “I don’t care about your nicked knick-knacks. Your burgled baubles bore me.”

Linda has taken care of Blu, a macaw, since he was a baby. A scientist came along to tell her that Blu is the last male of his kind and he wants to introduce him to the last female to try to keep the species going. Linda and Blu are hesitant, but they take the big trip to Rio. When Blu meets Jewel, his female counterpart, they don’t exactly see eye to eye. Jewel is only interested in escaping custody and returning to the jungle.

Rio was released in 2011.

It’s an animated movie. The animals talk, but not with humans.

The movie is mostly for kids, but it’s mildly amusing. If you’re watching it with kids at least you won’t be cringing. It’s colourful and has catchy music.

The story is fairly predictable. It’s more like Madagascar 3 than Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs — there’s a fair amount of slapstick and other silliness.

Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network) voices Blu and Anne Hathaway (One Day) voices Jewel. George Lopez (the TV show George Lopez) also has a significant role.

The movie was directed by Carlos Saldanha (Ice Age).

Rio 2 is scheduled for 2014.
