Ruby Sparks

{4.5/5} “The situation is crazy. I am not.”

Calvin wrote a bestselling novel when he was 19, and he’s been struggling to come up with another ever since. After a suggestion from his psychiatrist, a character named Ruby appears to him in his dreams — and he becomes obsessed with writing about her. The day after he finishes the first draft of his book, Ruby appears in his apartment.

Ruby Sparks was released in 2012.

Wouldn’t it be great if your partner had exactly all the qualities you wanted in a partner?

If you liked Stranger Than Fiction, you’ll like this movie.

It’s funny and thoughtful and the two leads (who are partners in real life) make you believe in the magic.

The playful music is by Nick Urata (Crazy, Stupid, Love.).

Paul Dano (Looper) plays Calvin. Zoe Kazan (Fracture), who also wrote the movie, plays Ruby. Elliot Gould (Ocean’s Eleven) plays Calvin’s psychiatrist.

Annette Bening (American Beauty), Antonio Banderas (The Mask of Zorro), Aasif Mandvi (the TV show The Daily Show), and Alia Shawkat (the TV show Arrested Development) are along for the ride.

The movie was directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie FarisĀ (who together also directed Little Miss Sunshine).
