The Company Men

{4.5/5} “I can’t have you challenging me in front of senior staff. They respect you. Question my judgement, you undermine my authority. I need to know, can I count on your full support? Good.”

Bobby goes to work one day and is shocked to find that the company is getting rid of hundreds of workers — including him. Phil has worked at the company for 30 years and is very worried about his job. Gene is in charge of the division that’s been gutted and he’s not happy about it. Jim is the head of the company and he’s just trying to keep it profitable. Sally is the HR person whose job it is to fire people. Gene and Sally are having an affair.

The Company Men was released in 2010.

This movie illustrates the problems of real people who are downsized when their company decides it has to make even more profit.

It’s fairly serious, but worth watching.

The gentle music is by Aaron Zigman (Bridge to Terabithia).

Ben Affleck (The Town) plays Bobby and Chris Cooper (The Muppets) plays Phil. Tommy Lee Jones (Men in Black 3) plays Gene and Craig T. Nelson (The Incredibles) plays Jim. Mario Bello (A History of Violence) plays Sally and Kevin Costner (Man of Steel) plays Bobby’s brother-in-law.

The movie was directed by John Wells (August: Osage County).
