The Spectacular Now

{4.5/5} “I like to think there’s more to a person than just one thing.”

Sutter is a partier whose last girlfriend broke up with him over a misunderstanding. He’s been hanging out with Amiee, a nice girl whom he’s grown to like a lot. They’re about to graduate high school, and he doesn’t think their relationship will last long. Sutter hasn’t seen his dad in years and his mom won’t tell him where he is. Amiee’s mom delivers newspapers but Amiee does a lot of the work.

The Spectacular Now was released in 2013.

It’s about figuring out who you are and what you want to do with the rest of your life, or at least the next phase.

It’s another movie about teens and their problems, but it’s well done — it had a certain realism that some movies lack.

It’s fairly serious, although there are funny parts.

It’s a great movie, with fabulous performances from the two leads.

Shailene Woodley (The Descendants) plays Amiee and Miles Teller (Rabbit Hole) plays Sutter. Jennifer Jason Leigh (eXistenZ) plays Sutter’s mom.

The movie was directed by James Ponsoldt (Smashed).
