St. Vincent

{4.5/5} “He don’t like people. People don’t like him. Except cat, and you. Why you like him?”

St. Vincent, released in 2014

Maggie and her son Oliver move in next door to Vincent. Despite Vincent’s grouchy nature he suggests that he babysit Oliver after school — he needs the money. Maggie’s ex-husband is trying to get custody of Oliver, and Vincent owes a loan shark money. Vincent is the most inappropriate babysitter since Uncle Buck, with similar comedic results. It’s funny and serious, and it’s about why it might be worthwhile to get to know someone who seems not so great at first. Bill Murray is mesmerizing as Vincent. Melissa McCarthy and Chris O’Dowd also star.

Directed by Theodore Melfi (writer on Winding Roads).
