The One I Love
{5/5} “So, we met at a party, and… it was magic. Within a half-hour we were driving up into this really nice neighbourhood, and we were running down the stairs of some stranger’s back yard, and then we were swimming, and we were in love.”
The One I Love, released in 2014
Ethan and Sophie are seeing a therapist, who suggests they go away for the weekend to a particular spot that he knows about. When they get there it seems great at first. Then they realize that something very strange — seemingly magical — is going on in the guest house.
There are only two actors on screen for most of the movie, so it’s up to them to pull this off — and they did. Mark Duplass and Elisabeth Moss are superb. Ted Danson has a small role as the therapist.
The movie was filmed at Ten Danson and Mary Steenburgen’s home.
As with Predestination, the filmmakers have the guts to tell the story they want to tell — and no Hollywood producer is interfering with them. I absolutely loved the premise, and the story unfolded brilliantly.
Directed by Charlie McDowell (The Discovery).
