Me and Earl and the Dying Girl

{5/5} “There’s a lot of pillows in here.”

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, released in 2015

Greg’s mom forces him to call Rachel, because she has cancer. Greg protests that  they’re only acquaintances but his mom doesn’t budge. Rachel doesn’t particularly want to hang out with Greg, but they give it a try. They become good friends.

Although Rachel’s situation is serious, much of the movie is screamingly funny. Greg is a very funny character, and so are his parents.

One great part of the movie is that Greg and Earl have for years made movies whose titles are puns based on famous movie titles, like A Sockwork Orange.

It’s a unique and beautiful movie.

The young  actors do a tremendous job — Thomas Mann, RJ Cyler, and Olivia Cooke. Nick Offerman and Molly Shannon have smaller but important parts.

Directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon (The Current War).
