Dorothy, Catherine, and Mary are three mathematicians who work at NASA in 1961. They happen to be black, and are not afforded all the same opportunities as their white colleagues. But it’s a time of change, and they’re all smart and resourceful. Everyone in doing their part to send a man into space. But they’re having trouble getting things right, since no one has ever done this before.

It’s based on a true story, and has many funny moments.

The main characters are delightful. It’s important because it’s shedding light on a piece of history people don’t know about, but it’s also a terrific story.

Stars Octavia Spencer, Taraji P. Henson, Janelle MonĂ¡e, and Kevin Costner. Directed by Theodore Melfi (St. Vincent). The soundtrack contains some terrific songs from the period.
