The Big Sick

{5/5} “Hey, can we have an awkward hug before we part forever?”

The Big Sick, released in 2017

Kumail is a stand-up comic and he meets Emily at one of his gigs. They hit it off right away and start dating. Things are going really well but Kumail is worried because his family insists that he marry a Pakistani woman. Some time after they have a big fight, Emily’s friend calls Kumail to tell him she’s in the hospital.

It’s a terrific romance, with some comedy and some seriousness.

It’s about telling the truth, and navigating modern life versus family tradition.

Kumail Nanjiani wrote the movie with his real-life wife, Emily V. Gordon. The story is loosely based on their relationship.

Stars Zoe Kazan, Holly Hunter, and Ray Romano. Directed by Michael Showalter (Hello, My Name Is Doris).
