McIntyre, published in 1986

Newly promoted Captain Kirk is looking forward to exploring the galaxy. He’s disappointed to find out that his first mission is to ferry a vaudeville company from starbase to starbase. The officers of the Enterprise don’t know what to make of their new captain, and his friend Gary is still in the hospital.

This is not a book in the Star Trek: Enterprise series — this is a book in the Original Series titled Enterprise: The First Adventure.

The novel didn’t wow me quite as much as it did the first time. It’s an odd book — at times it almost doesn’t feel like a Star Trek book.

It’s definitely a book from the 1980s when authors were more free to develop aspects of the universe on their own. Also, since it takes place when Kirk and McCoy are meeting the other characters for the first time McIntyre imagines that there might be some conflict, which is certainly plausible. Some characters even think they’ll transfer to another ship.

The story builds to an extremely satisfying conclusion. There’s an interesting first contact, and some interaction with the Klingons.

This is the 2nd time I’ve read it.

I’ve read 9 books by McIntyre — all her Star Trek books, plus her excellent Starfarers series.

{4.5/5} “I believed when I first observed you, that I could not work with you.
