How will they solve the problem if they can’t remember there’s a problem to solve? In “This Mortal Coil” Sheppard gets a cut that heals immediately, so he asks Dr. Keller to make sure he’s not infected with nanites. She says no, but why would she lie? In “The Last Man” Sheppard returns from a mission to find Atlantis empty — and when he looks out the window the city is resting on a desert rather than an ocean. A hologram of McKay appears to tell him that he’s accidentally travelled 48 000 years into the future.

Stargate Atlantis season 4 originally aired in 2007-08.

It’s another great season, close to 5/5, with interesting things happening in individual episodes and the larger story. The Wraith and the Replicators are both dangerous enemies. Then there’s Michael, the Wraith they tried to turn into a human, who has a monstrous plan.

The special effects in this series are great — Atlantis is a beautiful city, Wraith ships are suitably creepy, and space battles are exciting. In a few episodes when the action moves from one part of the city to another, the camera moves quickly between those two parts — which is pretty cool.

Two of the six main characters were replaced in season 4, so things are a bit different. Amanda Tapping (the TV show Sanctuary) reprises her role of Samantha Carter from Stargate SG-1. Jewel Staite (the TV show Firefly) joins the crew as Dr. Jennifer Keller.

David Nykl (Helen) plays Dr. Radek Zelenka. Kavan Smith (the TV show Eureka) plays Major Lorne. These two characters are around quite a bit — often their roles are minor, but occasionally they have some interesting things to do.

Christopher Heyerdahl (the TV show Sanctuary) plays the Wraith whom John names Todd — he works with the Atlantis team on occasion. Jill Wagner (the TV show Blade: The Series) plays Larrin, a leader in another group of humans they encounter — she has what you might call a love/hate relationship with John. Brenda James (The Barber) plays Katie, a botanist and Rodney’s girlfriend. Jodelle Ferland (Tideland) plays a princess in one episode. It’s always a pleasure to see her — I don’t see her too often because she’s usually in horror movies.

Christopher Judge (the TV show Sirens) drops by as Teal’c from Stargate SG-1 — and has one of the funniest lines in the whole series. And there are a couple of surprise visits from people you might have thought you’d never see again.

I previously reviewed season 3.

{4.5/5} “Perhaps the future is predetermined by the character of those who shape it.” In “Tabula Rasa” almost everyone gets sick — and the symptoms include amnesia.
