The Lawgiver’s dream. The finest ape that ever lived — my friend — believed that apes and men should live in harmony. I believe in that dream. The problem is that humans don’t. Down deep each man believes that he is superior to you stinking animals. They ruled the planet for a million years and they think they still own it.”

In the city of Mak apes and humans live in separate areas — they mostly live in peace. But then the Lawgiver is assassinated — by a human with a machine gun. Alaya, granddaughter of the Lawgiver, orders the release of Nix from prison. Nix killed many humans in the war, and now he will find the assassin — if he has to tear Skintown apart to do it.

Planet of the Apes: The Long War is a graphic novel that was published in 2011.

This book is part of the universe of the original five Planet of the Apes movies. It takes place 1300 years before Taylor arrived at the Planet of the Apes — or, to look at it another way, it takes place some number of years after the chimpanzee Caesar led a revolution after apes had been used as slaves by humans.

It was a great idea to set this new story in a different time period than we’ve seen before — because anything can happen. There are references to aspects from the movies — apes and humans have been at war, some humans are mute, and some humans worship the bomb (sort of). If, like me, you’re a fan of the original Planet of the Apes movies you’ll enjoy this book.

The book was written by Daryl Gregory (The Devil’s Alphabet) and illustrated by Carlos Magno (the comic book Transformers: Tales of the Fallen).

Gregory captures the spirit of the movies — we’re definitely on the Planet of the Apes. And he gives us a new cast of interesting characters to follow.

I like Magno’s artwork — it fits the gritty nature of the story. The apes look approximately the way they do in the movies, but slightly more realistic.

The story doesn’t end at the end of the book — I will likely pick up the next one.

{4.5/5} “Let me tell you what does make us different.
