{"id":14613,"date":"2019-07-03T21:23:54","date_gmt":"2019-07-04T01:23:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.davidmswitzer.com\/blog\/?p=14613"},"modified":"2019-07-03T22:05:44","modified_gmt":"2019-07-04T02:05:44","slug":"star-trek-v-the-final-frontier","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.davidmswitzer.com\/blog\/2019\/07\/star-trek-v-the-final-frontier\/","title":{"rendered":"Star Trek V: The Final Frontier"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>{4\/5} &#8220;&#8216;I am well versed in the classics, Doctor.&#8217; &#8216;Then how come you don&#8217;t know &#8220;Row, row, row your boat&#8221;?'&#8221; &#8212; Spock &amp; McCoy<\/p>\n<p><strong>Star Trek V: The Final Frontier<\/strong>, released in 1989<\/p>\n<p>The new Enterprise isn&#8217;t quite space worthy yet but it&#8217;s called to Nimbus III, the Planet of Galactic Peace, where someone has kidnapped the envoys. When they see a video, Spock is shocked to find that the kidnapper is his half brother, Sybok, who he hasn&#8217;t seen in decades. When the Enterprise arrives, they find that Sybok wants the ship &#8212; he wants to take it to Sha Ka Ree, where he thinks he will find God.<\/p>\n<p>There are some funny parts, but many of the parts that are supposed to be funny fall flat. The part when Kirk, Spock, and McCoy are in the brig is a good one.<\/p>\n<p>The novelization by J. M. Dillard makes 1 or 2 things make more sense, so if you incorporate that into your thinking you can see it as a slightly better movie.<\/p>\n<p>In general it&#8217;s not quite up to par with the previous movies, but there are some good parts. I like the friends-as-family theme.<\/p>\n<p>Stars DeForest Kelley, George Takei, Laurence Luckinbill, David Warner, and Charles Cooper. Directed by William Shatner (the documentary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.davidmswitzer.com\/blog\/2014\/03\/the-captains\/\"><strong>The Captains<\/strong><\/a>). The music by Jerry Goldsmith is superb, particularly &#8220;The Mountain.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This is the 5th or 6th time I&#8217;ve seen it.
