Spock has been in conversation with Chancellor Gorkon to open negotiations. Kirk and the Enterprise have been selected to escort Gorkon to a peace summit, but someone kills Gorkon. Kirk and McCoy are tried and sentenced to Rura Penthe, but Spock won’t leave them there to die.

This is a brilliant movie if it were about some other characters, but as a Star Trek movie it has some flaws.

I was bothered more this time about Kirk and his officers’ attitude towards the Klingons. Spock is the only one acting like himself — the others are bigoted in a way that doesn’t seem consistent. For example, Kirk doesn’t usually blame a whole race (Klingons) for the actions of one person (Kruge). I feel like Nicholas Meyer was more interested in telling the story he wanted to tell and less interested in continuity.

After the dinner scene, though, things mostly get better. There are lots of terrific parts and if you squint — or read the novelization — you can enjoy it as the last movie featuring all of the cast from The Original Series.

It’s about being willing to give your adversaries a chance.

Michael Dorn, Rene Auberjonois, Grace Lee Whitney, and Christian Slater have small parts.

Stars Christopher Plummer, Kim Cattrall, Iman, Kurtwood Smith, and Rosanna DeSoto.
