She felt like the token cripple in a dance troupe.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Starfish<\/strong> by Peter Watts, published in 1999<\/p>\n<p>Lenie Clarke has found a place to almost be alone &#8212; the bottom of the ocean. Beebe Station creates geothermal energy. Clarke likes going&nbsp; outside &#8212; even though there are huge fish with lots of teeth and geyser-like explosions. Eventually she &#8212; and the other rifters who come after her &#8212; would rather be outside than in.<\/p>\n<p>Read this book when you are ready for something different. Its unique setting and characters will grab you, and the biological speculation is astonishing.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s about what you care about when you become a different person. It&#8217;s about life that&#8217;s not as we know it &#8212; both the natural kind, and the artificial kind.<\/p>\n<p>This is the 2nd time I&#8217;ve read it &#8212; I&#8217;m going to read the sequel this time.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve read 2 books by Watts.
