And sometimes someone who seems nice when you meet them turns out to be not so nice after all.

You want to scream at every character in the movie and tell them to do something different than what they’re doing. All of the characters are more or less disturbed, but a couple of them are criminally disturbed.

It’s a well regarded movie, but I can’t recommend it. I’m not sure what the point is. It’s certainly not a comedy, dark or otherwise — there’s nothing funny here. If for some reason you want to be extremely uncomfortable, then watch this movie. If you’re watching the first half thinking “it’s not so bad” — it gets worse.

I suppose it makes a point about how people who do horrible things don’t necessarily look horrible or act horribly all the time, but I didn’t need to watch this movie to get that point.

The actors are certainly fearless — they were willing and able to do whatever the script asked them to do.

Jane Adams (Wonder Boys) plays Joy and Lara Flynn Boyle (Men in Black II) plays Helen.
