Now, where are the games?”

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 1, aired in 1993

Commander Benjamin Sisko is ordered to take over Deep Space Nine after the Cardassians leave. Major Kira, his liaison to the Bajorans, is skeptical that the Federation will be any better than the Cardassians. Sisko convinces Quark to stay on the station, in return for letting Nog out of jail. Sisko’s old Trill friend Dax is his science officer — she’s now Jadzia Dax but when he knew her before she was a man. In his first few minutes aboard the station, young Doctor Julian Bashir asks Dax to dinner and unintentionally insults Kira.

The premiere does a magnificent job introducing the situation and characters, and providing an exploration of linear existence between Sisko and the wormhole aliens. The premiere and the season finale give you the idea that future seasons will be better.

I like how Jake teaches Nog how to read. When Nog and Jake trade away Quark’s yamok sauce they get self-sealing stem bolts, a phrase that rolls off the tongue beautifully.

The theme music by Dennis McCarthy is sublime.

In general the stories this season are good — the execution is just slightly less than great.

In “Dax” Jadzia Dax is apprehended by someone claiming that when she was Curzon Dax he committed murder and treason — Sisko insists on an extradition hearing. In “The Nagus” Grand Nagus Zek comes to the station to hold a conference at which he names his successor — Quark. In “Duet” Kira works to find out whether a Cardassian who shows up at the station is a war criminal. In “In the Hands of the Prophets” Vedek Winn takes all the Bajoran children out of Keiko’s school where she was teaching them about the wormhole rather than the Celestial Temple.

Guest stars include John de Lancie, Fionnula Flanagan, Wallace Shawn, and Majel Barrett.

Stars Avery Brooks, René Auberjonois, and Terry Farrell.

Created by Rick Berman and Michael Piller (co-creators of Star Trek: Voyager).

This is the 2nd time I’ve seen it.

{4/5} “Yes, yes, yes.
