It was the same old Fat Thursday stuff we&#8217;d heard before, many times: about how we must all embrace the virtues of gluttony and sloth as we headed towards the Winter, and to remember those who had not survived hibernation last year through not being diligent about their weight, and to consider a career with the Sisterhood if female, and if male then to do one&#8217;s utmost to be a productive member of society.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Early Riser<\/strong> by Jasper Fforde, published in 2018<\/p>\n<p>Charlie sleeps for 16 weeks every winter, like 99% of the population. He&#8217;s tired of his job and when he gets a chance to apply to be Jack Logan&#8217;s assistant in the Winter Consuls he jumps at it. The Consuls act as police in the winter when all the police are sleeping. They&#8217;re supposed to go to Sector Twelve to investigate something about viral dreams, but more than one person warns him not to go.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a low-key humour throughout, kind of like Connie Willis.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s about being new at your job and dealing with a mysterious situation.<\/p>\n<p>Fforde has thought through a plethora of implications of his premise, and tells a gripping story.<\/p>\n<p>This is the 2nd novel I&#8217;ve read by Fforde.
