A. DeCandido, published in 2001

When the Iconian gateways appear, Colonel Kira is asked to command a rescue mission to Europa Nova, where toxic waste has appeared that will kill everyone. Nog and Share are going to the wormhole to try and find out why there are no gateways anywhere near Deep Space Nine. And Quark has been asked by the Orions to negotiate with the Iconians — and the Iconians’ negotiator is his cousin Gaila.

This story takes place at the same time as the previous book, Doors Into Chaos. It shows what the Deep Space Nine team is doing during the same crisis.

It’s about doing what you can to mitigate a sprawling catastrophe.

The story features Vaughn, Taran’atar, Ro Laren, Gul Macet, and — briefly but memorably — Garak.

Kira and Taran’atar end up meeting a Hirogen in the Delta quadrant.

I’ve read 5 novels plus 1 graphic novel by Keith R.
