Marjane is a young girl in Iran when the Shah is overthrown. Everyone is hopeful that the new government will be much better — unfortunately it turns out to be much worse. With the heavy restrictions on what you can say and do, and the war with Iraq, Iran is a dangerous place. Marjane’s parents decide to send her to school in Vienna, where she’ll be safe.<\/p>\n
Persepolis<\/strong> was released in 2007. It’s a French animated movie based on an autobiographical graphic novel. The author, Marjane Satrapi, co-directed the movie.<\/p>\n The animation style is fairly minimalist and the bulk of the movie is in black and white — this style seems to suit the subject matter.<\/p>\n It’s a story about growing up — the movie goes through more than 10 years. It’s also a story about Iran, a useful story for people who don’t know much about it.<\/p>\n There are moments of humour but on the whole it’s fairly serious. I highly recommend it.<\/p>\n The only actor I’ve heard of in the voice cast is Catherine Deneuve (Repulsion<\/strong>), who plays Marjane’s mother.
