{5/5} “‘They’re good people aboard the Enterprise-A — I should know after all, since I trained them — they can get along without me for a decent while.’ ‘That goes without saying, J.T. Question is, can you get along without them?'” — Kirk & Gillian

Star Trek: Debt of Honor by Chris Claremont, published in 1992

Captain James T. Kirk is on a boat with Gillian Taylor. Gillian is looking after the whales, George and Gracie. Kirk is remembering his battle to the death with Kruge on the Genesis Planet — and his son David dying, and his previous battle to the death with Khan. Years ago when Kirk was on the Farragut after the captain was killed, he worked with a Vulcan named T’Cel to help restore sensors — aliens that could pierce the hull with their own bodies attacked the ship.

This is a gripping story with a historical sweep and a great new character, T’Cel. Spock and McCoy play chess, and Uhura and Rand have a chat about loyalty and initiative. Saavik and Kor join the fun.

It’s about how you can find a peace within yourself when you’re with the right person. It’s about how you need to be persistent to solve a dangerous problem when you’re the only one who can do it — and, as always, have the right team to help you. It’s about building bridges between people you have previously thought of as enemies.

The artwork by Adam Hughes, Karl Story, and Tom McCraw is very good.

This is the 2nd time I’ve read it.

{5/5} “‘They’re good people aboard the Enterprise-A — I should know after all, since I trained them — they can get along without me for a decent while.’ ‘That goes without saying, J.T.
