The Mother Superior decides to send Maria out into the world to be a governess, to see how she does at that. So Maria becomes a governess for the von Trapp family — Captain von Trapp’s wife has died and he has 7 children. The children have been not-so-nice to their previous governesses and the captain seems cold and distant. What has Maria gotten herself into this time?

The Sound of Music was released in 1965.

It’s based on a true story. Like most movies based on true stories, the real story was a bit different (for example, they left Austria by train without anyone chasing them).

Like most musicals, the story in the movie is a bit simplistic — but it’s 3 hours long so it covers a fair bit of ground.

It’s one of the best musicals ever — every single song is highly memorable. The songs were written by the team of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II (South Pacific). The score is by Irwin Kostal (Mary Poppins).

You can tell that at least some of the movie was filmed on location in Salzburg.

I just discovered a couple of interesting things — Christopher Plummer’s singing was dubbed and the real Maria von Trapp had a cameo.

Julie Andrew (Mary Poppins) plays Maria and Christopher Plummer (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country) plays Captain von Trapp.

Eleanor Parker (The Man with the Golden Arm) plays the Baroness and Richard Haydn (Young Frankenstein) plays Max.
