Matt is the astronaut in charge of the mission. When some debris is accidentally sent their way, they’re cut off from the shuttle and have to make their way back. The debris leads to a cascading series of disasters, and before long they’re wondering if they will ever make it back to Earth.

Gravity, released in 2013

I saw it in 3D. As with Star Trek Into Darkness if you don’t like things flying at you, you should see it in 2D.

This is an astonishing movie, and I encourage you to see it on the big screen if you have any interest.

If you want to know what it’s like being an astronaut in space, this is the movie for you — it’s realistic like 2001: A Space Odyssey and Moon. Things go wrong like in Apollo 13 but this time you don’t know how it’s going to end.

There are stunning images of Earth from space.

Much of the movie is quite intense. Space is a dangerous place — only a thin layer separates you from airlessness and death.

With all the floating around of the astronauts, you will be guaranteed to ask this question: How did they film this movie?

The story takes place in the near future when the Chinese have added to their space station and the Americans have resurrected their space shuttles.

The music by Steven Price (Attack the Block) is sometimes subtle and sometimes energetic.

Sandra Bullock (The Lake House) delivers an amazing performance as Ryan. George Clooney (The Descendants) plays Matt. You’ll also recognize the voice of Mission Control — it’s Ed Harris (That’s What I Am).

The movie was directed by Alfonso Cuarón (Children of Men).

{5/5} “Clear skies with a chance of debris.” Ryan is a medical engineer who’s doing a spacewalk high above the Earth.
