As I’ve noted recently, Williams is one of my favourite movie composers. Not all of his great scores are for Spielberg movies (notable exceptions would be Star Wars, Superman, and Harry Potter) but many of them are. Here are the movies whose scores were represented:

1941

Close Encounters of the Third Kind

E. T. the Extra-Terrestrial

Hook

Jaws

Jurassic Park

Raiders of the Lost Ark & Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Saving Private Ryan

Schindler’s List

The Terminal

Warhorse

I haven’t seen 1941, Saving Private Ryan, Schindler’s List or Warhorse so I wasn’t familiar with that music, but I’m very familiar with the rest of it.

The highlights were Jaws, Jurassic Park, and Raiders of the Lost Ark — as I expected. But the march from 1941 was a revelation — it was new to me, but I absolutely loved it. The piece is reminiscent of Aaron Copland.

The main theme from Star Wars was played as an encore.

If you think John Williams only writes one type of music, this concert would disabuse you of that notion. As the conductor intended, the selections demonstrate Williams’ tremendous range. From the gentle War Horse to the joyous Hook to the sinister Jaws, each piece was memorable.

The symphony was terrific as always. I noted one little problem but that was it.

The conductor was Michael Krajewski — he spoke in between pieces and was informative and funny.

The Centre in the Square is a splendid venue — you can hear everything even from the very back row in the balcony.

I went to the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony’s performance of “John Williams and Spielberg.” What this means, of course, is that they played the music of John Williams that he composed for movies that Steven Spielberg directed.
