The underlying stonework and statuary &#8212; modeled vaguely on Angkor Wat &#8212; had been built half a thousand years earlier, then left for mountain rains to wear at, for moss to cover, for trees to penetrate. Afterwards, construction robots hid all the subtle machinery of late twenty-second technology within the &#8216;ruins.&#8217; Will respected that technology. Here was a place where no sparrow could fall unremarked. The owners were as safe from a quiet knife in the back as from a ballistic missile attack.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Some high-tech people are trying to give humanity a new start by rescuing a bunch of people trapped in bobbles and bringing them together millions of years in the future. But they only have about 300 people, so it&#8217;s going to be tough. At some point in the past there was an event that caused most of humanity to either leave or be destroyed, no one knows which &#8212; this event is called the Singularity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marooned in Realtime<\/strong> by Vernor Vinge was published in 1986. It&#8217;s a sequel to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.davidmswitzer.com\/blog\/2014\/03\/the-peace-war\/\"><strong>The Peace War<\/strong><\/a> but only a couple of characters from the first book are still around.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Peace War<\/strong> was a great book but this one is absolutely fascinating &#8212; you won&#8217;t be able to put it down.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s about different ideas of what humanity should be doing with itself. It&#8217;s also a mystery &#8212; Wil, the main character, is investigating the murder of one of the high-techs.<\/p>\n<p>If you read science fiction, add this to your list.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a short story, &#8220;The Ungoverned,&#8221; that takes place in between <strong>The Peace War<\/strong> and this book. It features Wil, and shows why he&#8217;s famous by the time of this one. You can find it in <strong>True Names and Other Dangers<\/strong> &#8212; it&#8217;s well worth reading.<\/p>\n<p>I will read more of Vinge&#8217;s work.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>{5\/5} &#8220;Castle Korolev was typical of the flamboyance of the advanced residences.
