I didn&#8217;t see anyone. No one saw me. I was the barber.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ed is a quiet, serious man who works as a barber in his brother-in-law Frank&#8217;s shop. He&#8217;s married to Doris, who works for Big Dave at a department store. Ed thinks Doris and Big Dave might be having an affair. He blackmails Big Dave into giving him $10 000 which he gives to a man he just met to invest in a dry cleaning business. But things don&#8217;t go according to plan &#8212; Big Dave finds out that it&#8217;s Ed who blackmailed him.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Man Who Wasn&#8217;t There<\/strong> was released in 2001.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s mostly serious &#8212; the humour is even more low key than in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.davidmswitzer.com\/blog\/2014\/05\/bottle-rocket\/\"><strong>Bottle Rocket<\/strong><\/a>. The scene where the cops inform Ed that his wife has been arrested is priceless.<\/p>\n<p>Ed is a terrific character, played to perfection by Billy Bob Thornton.<\/p>\n<p>I liked it quite a bit.<\/p>\n<p>The music is melancholic. Carter Burwell (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.davidmswitzer.com\/blog\/2013\/12\/the-hudsucker-proxy\/\"><strong>The Hudsucker Proxy<\/strong><\/a>) wrote the original music, plus there&#8217;s some Beethoven.<\/p>\n<p>Billy Bob Thornton (<strong>The Astronaut Farmer<\/strong>) plays Ed and Frances McDormand (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.davidmswitzer.com\/blog\/2013\/01\/moonrise-kingdom\/\"><strong>Moonrise Kingdom<\/strong><\/a>) plays Doris.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Badalucco (<strong>O Brother, Where Art Thou?<\/strong>) plays Frank and James Gandolfini (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.davidmswitzer.com\/blog\/2014\/03\/enough-said\/\"><strong>Enough Said<\/strong><\/a>) plays Big Dave. Richard Jenkins (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.davidmswitzer.com\/blog\/2013\/10\/jack-reacher\/\"><strong>Jack Reacher<\/strong><\/a>) plays Ed&#8217;s friend Walter and Scarlett Johansson (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.davidmswitzer.com\/blog\/2014\/04\/captain-america-the-winter-soldier\/\"><strong>Captain America: The Winter Soldier<\/strong><\/a>) plays Walter&#8217;s daughter Birdy. Tony Shalhoub (the TV show <strong>Monk<\/strong>) plays Freddy the lawyer.<\/p>\n<p>The movie was directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, aka the Coen brothers (<strong>The Hudsucker Proxy<\/strong>).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>{4.5\/5} &#8220;I was a ghost.
