But you’ll never get to the next great moment if you don’t keep going.”

Elaine Barrish is Secretary of State. She ran for president two years ago but failed to win the nomination. Her ex-husband, the former president, is now dating an actress. She has two sons. Douglas, who works as her assistant, is about to be married to Anne. T.J. has a substance abuse problem and once tried to kill himself. A reporter is following Elaine for a week, but this reporter has written some nasty things about her in the past. When a crisis in Iran comes out of nowhere, Elaine does whatever it takes to find out why it’s happening and how it can be fixed.

Political Animals originally aired in 2012. It’s a 6-part miniseries. I already reviewed the first episode.

This show is filled with fascinating characters and interesting situations. The complexity of the story and the great acting make it feel real.

The interactions between Sigourney Weaver (Elaine) and Carla Gugino (the reporter) are amazing. So are the interactions between Sigourney Weaver and Ciarán Hinds (Elaine’s ex-husband).

It’s a fairly serious story but there are moments of humour. There are plots and counter-plots — the big prize, for Elaine at least, is always the presidency.

There are some flashbacks, including to when Elaine found out her husband was cheating on her.

It’s about politics, journalism, and family. You won’t be able to stop watching this show, and you’ll wish it went on longer.

James Wolk (the TV show The Crazy Ones) plays Douglas and Brittany Ishibashi (November) plays Anne.
