The stars are no longer visible, and neither is the moon. The sun has been replaced by an imposter. Someone must have done this — but who, and why? Eventually it’s discovered that time is flowing more slowly inside the shield than outside. When this discovery is made it’s been 5 years since the event — but out in the universe it’s been 500 million years.

Every few chapters there’s a chapter that takes place some years in the future — what’s going on in these chapters is a bit mysterious, at least at first.

The ideas are big, the characters are unique, and the plot is gripping. If you read science fiction, this book should be on your list.

The is the second time I’ve read it.
