However, it is with sincere regret that I must now kill all of you.”

Dark Shadows, released in 2012

In the 1770s Barnabas Collins makes the mistake of telling Angelique Bouchard that he doesn’t love her. Angelique happens to be a witch — she sends his true love Josette to her death and changes him into a vampire. Then she gets the villagers to bury him. Barnabus’ coffin is dug up 200 years later. He returns home to find that the few members of his family who are left have fallen on hard times — but he will help them if he can. He also discovers that Angelique has survived and become very successful.

Visually it’s nice to look at — there’s a lovely cliff over the sea and the Collins mansion is interesting. The acting is top notch. It’s just the story that needed a bit more oomph. It’s a funny movie, and clever in spots, but the writers seemed to run out of steam. There are one or two things that don’t make much sense. Do I suggest you rush out to the theatre to see it? No, you can wait for the DVD.

Johnny Depp (Finding Neverland) plays Barnabas. Michelle Pfeiffer (Stardust) and Chloë Grace Moretz (Hugo) play two of his descendants. Relative newcomer Bella Heathcote (Beneath Hill 60) plays Josette. Helena Bonham Carter (Alice in Wonderland) plays Dr. Julia Hoffman, who’s currently staying at the Collins residence. And Eva Green (Casino Royale) plays Angelique. There are also a couple of surprise cameos.

I did enjoy the music by Danny Elfman (Batman, The Nightmare Before Christmas), one of my favourite composers.

Dark Shadows is based on the TV series of the same name from the late 1960s – early 70s. It’s been revived twice before, as a TV series in 1991 and a TV movie in 2005.

The movie was directed by Tim Burton (Edward Scissorhands, Big Fish).

Spoiler alert

The ending of the movie in particular is a bit disappointing. From what they ended up with it seems like when the writers asked themselves how they would end it, they said: “Let’s end it like every other movie — with a big fight scene and the good guys will win because they’re good guys.”

{3.5/5} “Love means never having to say you’re sorry.
