This made me very upset — they shouldn’t be allowed to do that.

It seems that a few weeks ago they changed their Windows 10 “upgrade” from an “optional upgrade” to a “recommended upgrade.” That means that anyone, like me, who automatically installs recommended upgrades got the new operating system.

The main reason for my outrage is that no company should be able to install a program on my computer without my consent. It shouldn’t matter that it’s Microsoft — this should be a firm principle.

There are a couple of secondary reasons. The installation could have easily had negative consequences — installing a new operating system has certainly caused problems before. Also, the installation took around an hour, during which time I couldn’t use my computer.

I feel like calling for a boycott of Microsoft — that’s how upset I am — but I’m not sure how practical that is. The next time I buy a computer, am I going to buy a Macintosh? No, they’re too expensive. Am I going to switch to another operating system like Linux? It’s a bit unlikely but possible — I may look into it one of these days.

Of course, there’s a way of going back to my old operating system — but there could be negative consequences of that too.

I hate having to spend time on things that I shouldn’t have to spend time on. I was very happy with how stable my computer was with my previous operating system. Now, insanely, I don’t even have a Start menu.

Microsoft recently installed its Windows 10 operating system on my computer without asking me.
