After being released from the penal colony he went to work as a maintenance engineer on a scientific station. When Miles O’Brien and Nog come for a visit, one of the experiments on the station goes a bit out of control — a mysterious being escapes its containment and forces an evacuation.

This is a slightly unusual Deep Space Nine novel, in that the only main characters who are featured are O’Brien and Nog. Captain Maxwell previously appeared in the Next Generation episode “The Wounded.”

It delves into the past of O’Brien, Nog, and Maxwell. O’Brien and Maxwell previously served together.

It’s a great story about friendship, redemption, and mysterious beings.

The previous novel in the story of the 24th century is Star Trek: DS9 — Ascendance.
