{"id":9833,"date":"2016-11-13T11:42:29","date_gmt":"2016-11-13T16:42:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.davidmswitzer.com\/blog\/?p=9833"},"modified":"2017-10-12T12:32:09","modified_gmt":"2017-10-12T16:32:09","slug":"dacapo-chamber-choirs-threshold-of-night","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.davidmswitzer.com\/blog\/2016\/11\/dacapo-chamber-choirs-threshold-of-night\/","title":{"rendered":"DaCapo Chamber Choir&#8217;s &#8220;Threshold of Night&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I went to DaCapo Chamber Choir&#8217;s concert titled &#8220;Threshold of Night.&#8221; The choir is debuting their new slogan &#8212; &#8220;giving ideas voice.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The choir was joined by Lottie Enns-Braun on organ and Allen Harrington on saxophone, both from Winnipeg.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the choir pieces (I&#8217;ll indicate organ with * and saxophone with +):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Michael McGlynn &#8212; O Ignis Spiritus+<\/li>\n<li>James Rolfe &#8212; Shadows<\/li>\n<li>Patrick Murray &#8212; The Echo<\/li>\n<li>Tarik O&#8217;Regan &#8212; Threshold of Night<\/li>\n<li>Sven David Sandstrom &#8212; Ah Sunflower<\/li>\n<li>Paul Mealor &#8212; Ubi Caritas<\/li>\n<li>Leonard Enns &#8212; I will lift up mine eyes+<\/li>\n<li>Jonathan Dove &#8212; Seek Him that Maketh the Seven Stars*<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here are the organ\/saxophone pieces:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Michael McGlynn &#8212; &#8220;From nowhere to nowhere&#8221; (#3 from Visions)<\/li>\n<li>Michael McGlynn &#8212; &#8220;Dorchadas&#8221; [Darkness] (#2 from Visions)<\/li>\n<li>Augusta Read Thomas &#8212; &#8220;Angel Tears&#8221; and &#8220;Earth Prayers&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You might think organ and saxophone is an odd combination, but it works quite well &#8212; Enns-Braun and Harrington have been playing together for 10 years.<\/p>\n<p>My favourites of the choir pieces were &#8220;Threshold of Night&#8221; and &#8220;Ubi Caritas.&#8221; My favourite of the organ\/saxophone pieces was &#8220;Dorchadas.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Shadows&#8221; was a world premiere, and the composer was in attendance.<\/p>\n<p>DaCapo is, as always, directed by Leonard Enns.<\/p>\n<p>I previous reviewed DaCapo&#8217;s concert &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.davidmswitzer.com\/blog\/2016\/03\/dacapos-blow-blow-thou-winter-wind\/\">Blow, Blow Thou Winter Wind<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I went to DaCapo Chamber Choir&#8217;s concert titled &#8220;Threshold of Night.&#8221; The choir is debuting their new slogan &#8212; &#8220;giving ideas voice.&#8221; The choir was joined by Lottie Enns-Braun on organ and Allen Harrington on saxophone, both from Winnipeg.
