DaCapo Chamber Choir’s “Starry Night”
I attended the DaCapo Chamber Choir’s concert “Starry Night.”
Here’s the program:
- Sven-David Sandström – Ah, Sunflower!
- Nicholas Kelly – Earthrise
- Leonard Enns – Nocturne
- Eriks Ešenvalds – Stars
- Morten Lauridsen – Sure on this Shining Night*
- Laura Hawley – Be Music, Night
- Eric Whitacre – Water Night
- Randal Thompson – Choose Something Like a Star*
- Jake Runestad – Let My Love Be Heard
- Matthew Emery – Night on a Starry Hill
- Leonard Enns – The Day is Done
*with pianist, Kento Stratford
The concert was dedicated to Jennie Wiebe, a choir member who recently died.
The choir is directed by Leonard Enns. He writes in the program: “The stars delight us, teach us, bring hope and comfort, guide us, and give us perspective. Perhaps, if we allow ourselves, we even hear the ‘music of the spheres.'”
There were several pieces I knew, which is very nice. Of all the great pieces, the Whitacre is my favourite.
The pieces have harmonies that will make you sit up and take notice. The choir is terrific, from sparkling highs to rumbling lows.
The appreciative audience gave the choir a standing ovation.
