Robot & Frank

{4.5/5} “I specialized in jewellery — diamonds. You want the most value by the ounce when you’re rappelling down a 50-story casino in the middle of a hurricane.”

Frank is getting a bit senile, so one day his son brings him a present — a robot, to help him around the house. At first he resents it trying to make him do things he doesn’t want to do, like eat more healthily and take hikes in the woods. But then he realizes that the robot can help him do something he used to do in the old days — steal jewellery.

Robot & Frank was released in 2012.

Most movies these days seem to be 2 hours long whether it’s warranted or not. Here’s a nice little movie that’s wrapped up in 90 minutes.

It’s a story about the friendship that develops between Frank and the robot. They’re both great characters, and there are lots of amusing parts.

The electronic music is by Francis and the Lights.

Frank Langella (Dave) plays Frank. James Marsden (X2: X-Men United) plays Frank’s son and Liv Tyler (The Lord of the Rings) plays Frank’s daughter. Susan Sarandon (Thelma & Louise) plays the librarian at the library where Frank is the only patron. Peter Sarsgaard (An Education) provides the voice of the robot. Jeremy Sisto (the TV show Law & Order) plays the sheriff.

The movie was directed by Jake Schreier (associate producer of Natural Selection).
