Best movies of the 1920s

Best of the best

  • Metropolis
    • Hugely influential in science fiction, but that’s not why you should watch it. Even though it’s a silent movie, even though the acting is a very different style than we’re used to, even though it’s a message movie — it’s still amazing. In the the future the rich and poor live in different areas, but some people try to change things.

Runner up

  • The Passion of Joan of Arc
    • As a movie, it didn’t grab me nearly as much as Metropolis. But it’s interesting because it really happened. The movie is based on the actual transcript of Joan of Arc’s trial — from 1431. After leading the French in battle, she was tried for heresy — she said that God talked to her.
