Directors worth keeping an eye on, part 4

Yet another set of 10 directors who have produced masterpieces, like the previous 10.

Jon Favreau

Favreau is both an actor and a director, and although the movies he’s directed have gone downhill over time there could definitely be an upswing.

  • Masterpiece
    • Elf
  • Great movie
    • Iron Man
  • Good movie
    • Iron Man 2
  • Mediocre movie
    • Cowboys & Aliens

Richard Kelly

Kelly isn’t very prolific, but hopefully the time spent on a new movie will be worthwhile.

  • Masterpiece
    • Donnie Darko
  • Mediocre but still interesting
    • Southland Tales

Ang Lee

American now but born in Tawain, Lee has filmed movies both in English and Chinese. I might have called Life of Pi a masterpiece if I hadn’t read the book first.

  • Masterpiece
    • Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
  • Great movies
    • The Ice Storm
    • Life of Pi
  • Mediocre movie
    • Hulk

Baz Luhrmann

An Australian director, Luhrmann’s movies are all very different — but they’re all worth watching.

  • Masterpieces
    • Romeo + Juliet
    • Strictly Ballroom
  • Great movies
    • Australia
    • Moulin Rouge!

Alex Proyas

It’s been a while since Dark City but that movie is one of my favourites — I’m hoping Proyas will return with another winner.

  • Masterpiece
    • Dark City
  • Great movie
    • Knowing
  • Good movie
    • I, Robot
  • Bad movie
    • The Crow

Sam Raimi

Raimi was able to create 2 of the best superhero films ever made, so he may return with something interesting.

  • Masterpieces
    • Spider-Man
    • Spider-Man 2
  • Bad movies
    • Darkman
    • Spider-Man 3

Rob Reiner

Reiner works as both an actor and director, first becoming famous for All in the Family.

  • Masterpiece
    • The Princess Bride
  • Great movies
    • The American President
    • The Bucket List
    • The Magic of Belle Isle
    • Stand by Me

Kevin Smith

Smith’s movies often contain one or two things that I find distasteful, but the rest of them are brilliant so they’re still worth watching. His last few movies haven’t enticed me to watch them, but I’m not counting him out yet. He also had a couple of brief TV series — the animated Clerks and the movie review show Spoilers. There have been 5 documentaries that show him answering questions and telling stories in front of large audiences. I’ve watched at least one of these — An Evening with Kevin Smith.

  • Masterpiece
    • Clerks
  • Great movies
    • Clerks II
    • Dogma
    • Jersey Girl
    • Zack and Miri Make a Porno
  • Good movies
    • Chasing Amy
    • Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
    • Mallrats

Ben Stiller

Stiller is very funny, both as an actor and a director — he could definitely come up with another winner.

  • Masterpieces
    • Tropic Thunder
    • Zoolander
  • Great movie
    • Reality Bites
  • Good movies
    • The Cable Guy
    • The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013)

Yimou Zhang

Zhang is a Chinese director. His movie Hero is perhaps the most visually stunning movie I’ve ever seen.

  • Masterpiece
    • Hero
  • Great movies
    • Curse of the Golden Flower
    • House of Flying Daggers
