Ex Machina

{5/5} “You’re wrong… Nathan… He isn’t your friend. You shouldn’t trust him. You shouldn’t trust anything he says.”

Ex Machina, released in 2015

Caleb wins a contest and gets to spend a week with his boss. He’s flown by helicopter to a remote location. His boss Nathan offers him an opportunity, if he agrees to sign a not-so-standard non-disclosure agreement — to conduct a Turing test on an android. To decide if the android Ava has artificial intelligence. Caleb is very excited to meet Ava but he’s also a bit suspicious about his mysterious host.

This is a slow moving but fascinating science fiction movie. It has a similar tone to Her. It should be a blockbuster, but it doesn’t have good guys and bad guys shooting at each other so it probably isn’t.

Alicia Vikander is astonishing as Ava.

Stars Domhnall Gleeson and Oscar Isaac. Directed by Alex Garland (writer of Never Let Me Go).

I watched this movie again — my review would be essentially the same. It’s still brilliant when you know what’s going to happen.
