Sherlock: The Abominable Bride

{4/5} “Our way of life is under threat from an invisible enemy. One that hovers at our elbow on a daily basis. These enemies are everywhere — undetected, and unstoppable.”

Sherlock: The Abominable Bride, released in 2015

A woman wearing her wedding gown kills herself. Later she is seen in the street shooting her husband. Holmes and Watson are called in by Scotland Yard to investigate. They don’t get anywhere immediately but months later Mycroft alerts them to a new connection to the case — a man has seen the bride who told him he will die tonight.

This show is a special made by the people that make the Sherlock TV series. But the series takes place in modern day, whereas this special takes place in the 19th century.* The same actors play Holmes, Watson, Mrs. Hudson, Mary, and Mycroft.

Some parts were funny, some parts were clever, and some parts were baffling.** Although it was enjoyable, it didn’t quite live up to the standard of the previous 3 seasons.

There is an interesting story here, but the episode as a whole ended up being a bit of a mishmash. I would have preferred more focus on the story and less on the gimmicky stuff.

I previously reviewed season 3.

Spoiler alert

*Later we see the characters in the present day as well.

**I grew a bit tired of the dreams, and the back and forth between the 19th century and present day.
