Movie composers worth listening to, part 8

This list continues from part 7.

Jon Brion

Brion is also a composer, producer, songwriter, and instrumentalist outside of movies. Upcoming work includes Wilson.

  • Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
    • Peer Pressure

Clint Eastwood

You know Eastwood as an actor and director. He has also scored some of the films he’s directed. You may think of him as a tough guy but his music can be tender.

  • Changeling
    • End Title

John Frizzell

Frizzell has written for movies and TV shows since 1994. Upcoming work includes Leatherface.

  • Alien: Resurrection
    • Main Title

Philip Glass

Glass writes symphonies and other works, and plays keyboard in the Philip Glass Ensemble. He also manages to score a lot of movies, and has an amazing relationship with Godfrey Reggio. The soundtrack for The Truman Show was written partly by Glass and partly by Burkhard Dallwitz.

  • The Illusionist (2006)
    • The Chase
  • Powaqqatsi
    • Anthem – Part 1
  • The Truman Show
    • The entire soundtrack, especially Opening (From Mishima)

Manos Hadjidakis

Hadjidakis scored Greek (and occasionally other) movies from the 1940s to the 1990s. He also composed music outside of movies, and started his own record company.

  • Never on Sunday
    • Main Title: Never on Sunday

Jerome Moross

Moross composed scores for movies and TV shows between the 1940s and 1960s. He also composed various other works and was an accomplished pianist.

  • The Big Country
    • Main Title

Trevor Rabin

Rabin was part of the rock band Yes, and has also composed music for a bunch of movies and TV shows.

  • National Treasure
    • National Treasure Suite

Lalo Schifrin

Schifrin has been composing for movies and TV shows since the 1950s. He has a great relationship with Clint Eastwood. He’s also a pianist, composer, and conductor outside of movies. Upcoming work includes Sweetwater.

  • The Best of Mission: Impossible – Then and Now
    • Mission: Impossible (Main Title)

Mark Snow

Snow has scored a bunch of movies and TV shows but is probably best known for his work on The X-Files, both the series and the movies. I would also like to get the piece “Scully’s Theme” from the episode “Within” but it doesn’t seem to be available.

  • The X-Files – I Want to Believe
    • Good Luck

Tom Tykwer

Tykwer is known as a director but he, like Clint Eastwood, also writes music for some of his own projects. Upcoming work includes the TV show Babylon Berlin.

  • Cloud Atlas (with Reinhold Heil and Johnny Klimek)
    • Cloud Atlas End Title
