Board & card games

It’s time for an update to this list.

The board games (and a few card games) I’m listing here are sometimes called Eurogames — often made in Europe, they rely on more strategy and less luck. My other list of card games is a list of games you can play with a regular deck of cards.

Depending on whether it’s an odd or even day, I’ll say Settlers of Catan or Ticket to Ride is the best board game ever made.

Longer Games (roughly 45 to 75 minutes)

  • Best of the best
    • 7 Wonders
    • Candamir: The First Settlers
    • Carcassonne
    • Cities and Knights of Catan
    • Dominion
    • Elasund: The First City
    • Elfenland
    • The Settlers of Catan
    • Starfarers of Catan
    • Ticket to Ride Europe
    • Tzolk’in: The Mayan Calendar
  • Runner ups
    • Alhambra
    • Blue Moon City
    • El Grande
    • Jamaica
    • Lost Cities: The Board Game
    • Pandemic +
    • Robo Rally
    • Star Trek Panic +
    • Takenoko

Shorter Games (roughly 15 to 45 minutes)

  • Best of the best
    • 10 Days in Africa
    • Ingenious
    • Wooly Bully
  • Runner ups
    • 6 nimmt!
    • Blokus Trigon
    • Camel Up
    • Colt Express
    • Kingdom Builder
    • Qwirkle
    • Tokaido
    • Ubongo
    • Zooloretto

2 Player Games

  • Best of the best
    • Battle Line
    • Catan Card Game
    • Dragonheart
    • Lost Cities
  • Runner up
    • Race for the Galaxy

Many of these games have different versions or expansions — I’ve listed the version I’ve played most often.

+ These games are cooperative.

One game from “the old days” that’s still worth playing is Scotland Yard, made in 1983.

Other games I might add to the list if I play them one or two more times include Taluva, Between Two Cities, and Lord of the Rings.
