Venom

{4.5/5} “Apparently I have a parasite.”

Venom, released in 2018

Eddie Brock was a reporter, but he made a big mistake — he lost his job, his girlfriend’s job, and his girlfriend all on the same day. He’s having trouble figuring out what to do with his life when someone from the Life Foundation tells him that they’re recruiting poor test subjects who are all dying. When she sneaks him into the lab, he comes face to face with an alien organism, a symbiote.

Venom is a character in the Spider-Man comics but this movie isn’t part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s certainly much better than the last time we saw Venom, in Spider-Man 3.

It has interesting characters and a fine sense of humour. It’s also quite violent.

The movie contains Stan Lee’s penultimate cameo. There are 2 mid-credits sequences.*

Stars Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, and Jenny Slate. Directed by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland). The bombastic music is by Ludwig Göransson.

Spoiler alert

*Woody Harrelson is in the 1st one, setting up a sequel. The 2nd is a preview of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which will definitely be worth seeing.
