The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special

{4.5/5} “‘Death Star 2 feels kind of… derivative.’ ‘Mmm hmm, I suppose you have a better name?’ ‘How about Starkiller Base?’ ‘Pfft, that’s the stupidest name I ever heard.'” — Darth Vader & the Emperor

The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special, released in 2020

It’s Life Day and Rey, Finn, Poe, and their friends are celebrating aboard the Millennium Falcon. Rey has been trying to train Finn as a Jedi but feels she’s missing something. She reads in one of her books that on Life Day by going to a certain temple a Jedi can learn from the past — she sees past Jedi masters training their students.

The original Star Wars Holiday Special from 1978 is well known as a bad show — George Lucas never let it be shown after the first time.

But this one is fun, and probably the only place you can see Rey battle Darth Vader during the Battle of Hoth.

It’s clever, funny, and has a nice message. It’s the holiday special you were looking for.

It would have been nice if more cast members had reprised their roles. On the other hand, Tom Kane’s Yoda and Matt Sloan’s Darth Vader are terrific.

Stars the voices of Kelly Marie Tran, Anthony Daniels, and Billy Dee Williams. Directed by Ken Cunningham (the TV show Lego Jurassic World: Legend of Isla Nublar). The music by Michael Kramer incorporates many of the glorious themes of John Williams.
