Enemy

{2.5/5} “Did you have a good day at school?”

Enemy, released in 2012

Adam is a history professor. When he sees someone in a movie who looks just like him, he becomes obsessed with him. He tracks Anthony down and calls him, asking to meet — Anthony agrees. Meanwhile, Anthony’s pregnant wife Helen is very suspicious of the situation and thinks that Anthony knows more than he’s telling her.

This is an odd movie, and probably won’t grab you right away. It gets a bit more interesting once the two characters start interacting.

I haven’t watched a movie as baffling as this since I’m Thinking of Ending Things. If you think the direction in this movie might be anything like Arrival or Blade Runner 2049 it’s not.

If you’re going to watch it, watch it on a day when you have some patience — it’s slow moving. There was some interesting stuff in the 2nd half but it still was intermittent and the ending made me like it even less.

Jake Gyllenhaal does a great job playing 2 characters, of course. But the story will leave you shaking your head.

Stars Sarah Gadon and Mélanie Laurent. Directed by Denis Villeneuve (Arrival). The eerie music is by Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans.
