Lightyear
{4/5} “Mission failure imminent. Please record your last words.”
Lightyear, released in 2022
Buzz Lightyear’s ship gets stranded on a planet with giant vines that try to strangle you. He and his team take a year to gather the resources on the planet that they need in order to fix their ship. His first test of hyperdrive fails but when he returns to the planet he finds he’s been gone for 4 years. Buzz feels that it’s his fault everyone’s stuck on the planet.
This movie is in the Toy Story universe — it’s the movie that Andy saw and then because of that got a Buzz Lightyear action figure.
It’s beautifully animated — which isn’t surprising, but is still nice.
I like how when Buzz’s mission is successful the autopilot shoots confetti into the cabin.
It’s a great science fiction movie if you watch it on its own. But within the Toy Story universe, it’s a bit odd that Buzz doesn’t act as a Space Ranger much during the course of the movie as we would expect him to.
Stars the voices of Chris Evans, Taika Waititi, and James Brolin. Directed by Angus MacLane (Finding Dory). The exuberant music is by Michael Giacchino — I particularly liked the end credits theme.
